7 WaterMinder alternatives for iPhone.

Published August 27, 2026 · by Bruno Martins

The short answer

Almost nobody leaves WaterMinder because it tracks badly — it tracks well. They leave because it’s a record-keeping app, and the record stopped being motivating. So the right replacement is the one that fixes your reason:

  • It never gave me a reason to open itAquaJoy (XP across 100 levels, streaks, pins, no account, reminders that switch off at your goal) or Plant Nanny (a plant that wilts when you skip).
  • I want everything WaterMinder does, plus a reward loopWaterllama, the most established all-rounder here.
  • I want less app, not moreMy Water, or Hydro Coach for a rank that stays in the background.
  • My iPhone can’t run iOS 16AquaJoy (iOS 15.1), or Water Reminder (iOS 13) if you’re further back still.

First, the fair part: WaterMinder is good at what it does. It’s been on the App Store since 2013, holds a 4.7 average across 34,000+ ratings, calculates intake from body weight, syncs to Apple Health, and has one of the most mature Apple Watch apps in the category. If what you need is a reliable ledger of what you drank, it is still one of the best answers.

If you're happy with it, stay. This page is for the specific cases where it isn’t the right fit — and there are four common ones.

Why people look for a WaterMinder alternative

  • It logs, it doesn’t motivate. The most common reason. There’s no meaningful reward loop, so once logging stops being novel there’s nothing pulling you back into the app.
  • It requires iOS 16. An older iPhone can’t run current versions, and there are alternatives that go back to iOS 12.
  • It’s more app than needed. Twelve years of features add up, and some people just want a number and a nudge.
  • Paywall friction. Like every app in this category it sells an in-app purchase, and where that line falls is a matter of taste — see what “free” actually means in hydration apps.

Disclosure: AquaJoy is our own app. It’s on this list because it answers the most common reason people leave WaterMinder — the missing reward loop — and because it’s one of the few hydration apps with no account at all. It is not the pick if you need an Apple Watch app; that’s stated in its own entry, as it is for every app here. Ratings, iOS requirements and Watch support all come from public App Store listings checked in August 2026.

1. Waterllama — the closest thing to a straight upgrade

Switch if: you like WaterMinder but want a reason to open it

Waterllama does everything you’re already used to — goal calculation from weight, activity and weather, Apple Health sync, Apple Watch app, widgets, charts and monthly recaps — and then adds the layer WaterMinder deliberately doesn’t have: 140 collectible characters that fill as you drink, 10+ challenges, streaks, and 150+ beverage types with different hydration credit. It won a 2022 App Store Award, was an Apple Design Award finalist, and holds a 4.9 across more than 159,000 ratings.

Catch: iOS 17 minimum, and it’s a busier app than WaterMinder, not a calmer one.

2. AquaJoy — XP and levels, no sign-up

Switch if: you want progression, not a spreadsheet

If you're leaving WaterMinder because it never gave you a reason to open it, this is the most direct answer on the list. AquaJoy takes the game-progression route rather than the pet or character route: every log earns XP toward one of 100 levels, daily goals build streaks, and hydration milestones unlock collectible pins. Unlike a collection that sits half-finished or a plant that wilts at you, a level bar only ever moves forward.

Three other things it does differently from WaterMinder. Logging is one tap on quick-add sizes you set yourself. Reminders run in a window you choose and stop for the day once you hit your goal, instead of firing on a fixed interval regardless of what you've drunk. And there's no account, no email and no sign-up — hydration data stays on your device — with Premium available as a one-time lifetime unlock rather than only a subscription.

It also runs on iOS 15.1, a lower requirement than WaterMinder's iOS 16, so it's an option on an iPhone that current WaterMinder builds have left behind.

Catch: it launched in August 2026, so there's no rating history yet, and there's no Apple Watch app and no Apple Health sync. If you log from your wrist, or you want to carry your existing Health history across, that rules it out for now.

3. Plant Nanny — the guilt-based option

Switch if: you'd water a plant before you'd water yourself

Every glass waters a digital plant that grows when you hydrate and visibly suffers when you don’t. Plants come in three difficulty levels and accumulate into a greenhouse. 106,000+ ratings at 4.7 say the mechanic works on a lot of people. It’s the furthest thing from WaterMinder on this list in temperament, which for some people is exactly the point.

Catch: more taps per day than a pure tracker, and the guilt mechanic actively irritates some people.

4. Hydro Coach — light gamification

Switch if: you want a reward loop that stays out of the way

Personalised intake, quick drinks, stats and history, a widget, Apple Watch complications and Apple Health integration, plus a lifetime sea-creature rank you climb as you keep logging. It sits between the plain trackers and the full games — closer to WaterMinder’s temperament than Waterllama, but with something to work toward.

Catch: under a thousand ratings, so far less of a track record, and the rank climbs slowly enough that it may not carry the first month.

5. My Water — deliberately less

Switch if: WaterMinder is more app than you wanted

Shipping since 2015 and one of the first hydration apps with Apple Watch support. The feature list is short on purpose: intake calculator, reminders, metric and imperial units, graphs, small awards. If the reason you’re leaving is that you open WaterMinder and see too much, this is the pared-down version.

Catch: it now requires iOS 18, a steep floor for an app this simple.

6. Water Reminder by VGFIT — for older iPhones

Switch if: your iPhone can't run iOS 16

This is the practical answer when the problem isn’t WaterMinder’s design but your hardware. It runs on iOS 13, calculates a target, spaces reminders between your wake and sleep times, supports custom drink volumes, keeps daily/weekly/monthly history and writes to Apple Health. 78,000+ ratings at 4.7.

Catch: the interface is dated, and reminders fire on their schedule regardless of what you’ve already drunk.

7. Apple Health — no app at all

Switch if: you're done with hydration apps

Health has a Water field under Nutrition. You can enter a daily figure by hand, and your existing WaterMinder history is already there if you had Health sync on. No download, no subscription, no notifications.

Catch: several taps per entry, no reminders, no feedback of any kind. Very few people keep it up.

Can you take your history with you?

Partly, and this is worth knowing before you switch. WaterMinder writes intake to Apple Health, so any replacement that reads Health can pick up your existing figures instead of starting you at zero. What doesn’t transfer is everything app-specific — streaks, badges, custom containers, achievements. Those live in the app that created them.

If that matters, it’s an argument for choosing a replacement with Apple Health support (Waterllama, Plant Nanny, Hydro Coach, My Water, Water Reminder). If you’d rather draw a line and start clean, it doesn’t matter at all.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to WaterMinder?

Waterllama, for most people — it matches WaterMinder’s tracking and Apple Watch support while adding a real reward loop, and holds a higher App Store rating. If you’re leaving because WaterMinder feels like data entry, pick by motivation style instead.

Is WaterMinder free?

It’s free to download and sells an optional in-app purchase, like every other mainstream water tracker. Check the In-App Purchases section on its App Store listing for current unlocks and prices.

Is there a free alternative to WaterMinder?

All of them are free to download, so the real question is what each free tier covers. Look for one where logging, setting a goal and reminders all work without paying — AquaJoy keeps all three free and requires no account.

Why do people switch away from WaterMinder?

Usually not because it tracks badly. The common reasons are the missing reward loop, the iOS 16 requirement on older iPhones, and wanting a lighter app.

Can I move my WaterMinder history to another app?

Partially — intake figures written to Apple Health carry over to any app that reads Health. Streaks, badges and custom containers don’t transfer.

If the missing piece was progression: AquaJoy is free, and there's no sign-up.
